Palaiography: scientific field, complementary to philology and history, which studies the historical development of writing (materials, instruments, systems) and deals with the reading and dating of old manuscripts of various periods and cultures. The result of this study is the provision of important information about the history, culture and socio-political structures of the period to which the manuscripts belong.

Overall, the science of palaeography makes a decisive contribution to the understanding and preservation of cultural heritage, as well as to the reconstruction and interpretation of history.
